1.10 Managing Oracle Database Software


1. Overview


Purpose

In this tutorial, you upgrade your Oracle 11gR2 database to Oracle 12c.

Introduction

This tutorial shows you how to upgrade an Oracle Database.

Software Requirements

Prerequisites

Before starting this tutorial, you should:
  • Install Oracle Database 11gR2 (11.2.0.2 or above) and the sample schemas

2. Upgrading the Database 


  • Installing the Oracle Database 12c Software
In this topic, you start the Oracle universal installer and perform the software only installation for 12c Oracle Database.

1. Open a terminal window. Navigate to the location where you have staged the 12c Oracle Database software.

2. Run the universal installer.

3. The Configure Security Updates page of the Oracle database installer wizard appears. De-select the "I wish to receive..." box and click Next. Click Yes in the confirmation window.

4. Click Next in the Download Software Updates page.

5. In the Select Installation Option page, select Install database software only and click Next.

6. In the Grid Installation Options page, click Next.

7. In the Select Product Languages page, click Next.

8. In the Select Database Edition page, click Next.

9. In the Specify Installation Location page, verify the default values and click Next.

10. In the privileged Operating System Groups page, verify the group details and click Next. Note: your screenshot might differ from the one below depending on the groups created in your system.

11. The installer performs the prerequisite checks.

12. In the Summary page, review the details and click Install.

13. Oracle software installation begins.

14. A Execute Configuration scripts window appears.

15. Open a terminal window and switch to the root user. Execute the specified file. If you are prompted to overwrite the files, enter y.

16. Click OK in the Execute Configuration scripts window.

17. The installation was successful. Click Close.

  • Upgrading the Database using Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA)
1. Open a terminal window. Execute the oraenv utility to set the ORACLE_HOME environment variable to the 12c software home.

2. Enter dbua to invoke the Database Upgrade Assistant.

3. In the Select Operation page, accept the default Upgrade Oracle Database selection and click Next.

4. In the Select Database page, verify the existing database details and click Next.

5. The Upgrade Assistant fetches the database information.

6. In the Prerequisite Checks page, verify the Validation results. For any warnings and errors, apply a suitable action to fix it. The database may have few components such as EM(Enterprise Manager) that may not be upgraded to maximize the performance during the upgrade.

7. Note: Before upgrading the database, it is a good process to run preupgrd.sql script under <12c_home>/rdbms/admin to identify any issues pertaining to upgrade.
In the Upgrade Options page, review the details and click Next.

8. In the Management Options page, accept the default selection of Configure EM Database Express and modify the EM Database Express Port as per your requirement and click Next

9. In the Move Database Files, select the Move Database Files as Part of Upgrade, Use Oracle Managed Files and Move Fast Recovery Area as Part of Upgrade options. Accept the default values and click Next.

10. In the Network Configuration page, verify the listener details and click Next.

11. In the Recovery Options page, accept the default selection and click Next.

12. Review the Summary page and click Finish.

13. The database upgrade Progress page appears.

14. Click Upgrade Results to view the upgrade results.

15. Click Close.
